A COUPLE who met while they both serving in the forces have celebrated their diamond wedding .
Ted and Barbara Helyar met at a dance at Southend when he was in the Royal Navy and she was serving with the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
The couple, of Newsome Avenue, Newsome married at St John's Church in Newsome.
They have a daughter and two grandsons, one of whom has died.
Mr Helyar, 80, worked in the buidling trade when he was demobbed. He then worked as a crane driver at Blakeborough's in Brighouse for 15 years and after that as a shotblaster at David Brown Tractors at Meltham.
Mrs Helyar worked as a two-end winder at Brook and Engelsman at Taylor Hill for 24 years and then as a warper at Gledhill's at Lockwood for 11 years.
The couple are both keen bowlers. Mr Helyar plays at Newsome and Mrs Helyar was a Yorkshire County bowler at Meltham for many years. The couple celebrated with a family meal on the day.
