A KIRKBURTON couple have celebrated their diamond wedding.

Vivian and Rita Baker marked the special occasion with a family meal at the Three Acres pub in the village.

The couple – pictured now and on their wedding day _ were married in Surrey at Carshalton Methodist Church after meeting at a club for ex-services members.

During the war Mr Baker served as a petty officer radio mechanic for the Navy, while Mrs Baker was an air wireless mechanic.

The couple started married life in Surrey, but later moved to Kirkburton.

Mr Baker was chief accountant for disgraced architect John Poulson, of Pontefract, and a witness for the prosecution in his 1974 fraud trial.

He later worked as company secretary for Huddersfield drinks company Ben Shaws for 17 years.

Mrs Baker was a secretary for a bank in London before leaving work to look after the couple’s children.

She later volunteered at the Save the Children charity shop in Huddersfield for 25 years.

The couple have two children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. (PC280909Bdiamond)
