BOGUS water engineers stole £2,000 from a retired couple after conning their way into the house.
Two men knocked on the door of the house on Barcroft Road in Newsome claiming to be from Yorkshire Water.
They told the 69-year-old woman and her 73-year-old husband they needed to check their water supply.
While the couple were distracted in the bathroom by one of the men, the other searched the property and took cash and bank books before the men left. The incident happened at about 1.30pm on Tuesday.
The burglars were described as white and middle aged and were wearing black trousers and T-shirts.
Now police have issued warnings to other potential victims.
Det Con Russ Conlon said: “Yorkshire Water never operate in this way.
“Their personnel have no reason to knock on doors to check water supplies. Householders should refuse entry to anyone acting in this way.
“You should know if you have a problem with the water supply in your home.
“If you are unsure, contact Yorkshire Water. Don’t let these people into your house under any circumstances.”
