A HUDDERSFIELD couple are to mark 60 years of marriage with their family.

Geoff and Nancy Mellor, of Almondbury, met 63 years ago at a dance at Slaithwaite Barracks.

After a three-year romance the couple decided to marry when Mr Mellor left the Royal Navy.

The couple married at Linthwaite Church on July 24 1948.

Mrs Mellor, 82, said: “He just asked me to marry him; I think we always knew we would get married.

“The wedding day itself was lovely, a real family occasion. My dress was one of those old-fashioned types with a big bouquet you don’t see nowadays.

“We went to Morecambe for our honeymoon as that was all we could afford.”

Mr Mellor worked in the textile industry while Mrs Mellor was a nursing auxiliary nurse.

The couple have two children, Christopher and Susan, and three grand-daughters and are excitedly awaiting their first great-grandchild in October.

Mrs Mellor believes the secret of a happy marriage is working together.
