FUNDRAISERS Richard Hakier and Rebecca Sellens are taking things one step at a time.

The couple, both 26, are more than halfway through an epic 230-mile walk from London to Huddersfield.

They are making the 10-day journey along England’s canals in memory of their grandmothers, who both died from cancer.

Former Colne Valley High School student Richard, who grew up in Longwood, said: “The feet are bearing up.

“We have a few blisters, but we have said that if we have to complete it on stumps we will do.

“It’s the equivalent of doing just under 10 marathons in 10 days.

“We trained hard, but we only realised how tough it was going to be when we started.

“Every day is painful, but we are keeping in mind what we are doing it for and that spurs us on.”

His grandmother, Anne Marie Hakier, a nursing assistant at Storthes Hall Hospital, died from lung cancer in October, 2000.

Rebecca, who lived in Mount, is doing the walk in memory of her grandmother, Pam Crowder.

Mrs Crowder, a former member of Woodhouse Operatic Society, died last year after a long fight with breast cancer.

The couple, who now live in London, are raising money for the Breast Cancer Care charity.

They set off from Uxbridge, west London, on Saturday and have already been through Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire.

Richard added: “The further north we go the nicer and more generous people are getting.

“We were hoping to raise £2,500, but we have already raised about £3,500. We hope to reach £4,000 by the time we get to Huddersfield.”

They are due to arrive at Tunnel End in Marsden on Monday evening.
