Two people were plucked to safety after a car left the road and plunged into the canal at Aspley Basin in Huddersfield tonight
The drama happened at around 9pm.
Customers at The Aspley pub were left shocked as the car crashed into the water.
It is understood passers-by rushed to help and the people in the car, believed to be a man and a woman, were able to scramble out and clambered onto the roof of the stricken car.
A witness said the car somehow floated into the side and the two people were rescued.
They were being checked over by paramedics but were not thought to be seriously injured.
The witness said the first he knew was when the car landed in the water. "We went outside and saw this car had gone fully into the canal," he said.
"There was a man and a woman on top of the car. The car floated to the side so they could get out."
Huddersfield Fire Station said that fire crews were despatched but the call was cancelled and firefighters did not reach the scene. However crews from Slaithwaite did.
Watch Commander Matthew Green said the couple in the car had managed to escape through the windows as the car bobbed around in the chilly waters.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said the drama at Aspley Wharf Marina involved a BMW car which had been parked in a car park, believed to be that of The Aspley pub and restaurant.
"The vehicle was in the car park and the driver has possibly selected the wrong gear so we are looking at an accident," he said.
"There were no arrests and everyone is fine. Recovery of the vehicle is underway."
