HUDDERSFIELD'S open market might not sound like the most romantic place in the world.

But for one lovestruck couple, Paris and Rome can never compete with the town's busy landmark.

Hundreds of shoppers looked on in amazement on Saturday, when Brendan Dunne went down on bended knee to propose to girlfriend Rebecca Turner.

The 34-year-old made the surprise "official" announcement over the market's loudspeaker system while Rebecca, 32, was waiting at a jewellery stall.

He then appeared with a bunch of flowers to complete his perfect proposal.

The couple, of Chapelgate, Scholes, Holmfirth, decided last month to get married and booked the wedding for March 17 next year at Gretna Green.

They had already looked for an engagement ring and found one they liked at the market's Lone Star jewellery stall.

Brendan said: "We ordered the ring together, but I realised there hadn't been that element of surprise.

"The ring was ready to collect on Saturday and then we were going straight up to Gretna Green to finalise preparations for our wedding.

"It was Tony on the stall who suggested doing the proposal over the Tannoy.

"Everyone stopped and listened. Rebecca was so surprised. She never expected it.

"She was crying and said yes."

Brendan said shoppers came to congratulate the pair straight after the announcement.

He added: "They were coming up to us saying nothing romantic had ever happened in the market before.

"It was wonderful and so perfect because of everyone's reactions.

"The staff were so helpful too. It was overwhelming."
