A CAR burst into flames after a crash at Clifton.

A couple had to be cut free from the other car involved in the head-on smash.

The accident, involving a Vauxhall Astra and a Peugeot 306, was on Wakefield Road near Junction 25 of the M62 at Brighouse at 1pm on Monday.

A spokesman for Brighouse fire station said: "The Astra burst into flames on impact, but the driver managed to scramble clear.

"The middle-aged couple in the Peugeot were both injured and we worked alongside the paramedics.

"The woman was gently lifted out, but we did not want to move the man at all for fear he had spinal injuries."

Firefighters cut the roof off, let the seats down and then placed him on a spineboard stretcher.

The couple were both traumatised and taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for treatment.

The fire in the Astra was confined to the inside of the car.
