THE CASE of a father, who drove with his children in the car while almost five times the drink driving limit, has been adjourned.

Adam Whitehead, 36, of Norcross Avenue, Oakes, drove, while drunk, with his three children in the back of his car, on June 19.

Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court had heard Whitehead’s children had to be rescued from the back of his car.

Whitehead was due to be sentenced yesterday.

But the case was adjourned yesterday so he could be assessed for alcohol dependency.

A member of the public had spotted Whitehead when his car apparently caught fire, giving off a huge amount of smoke.

But he continued his journey with the youngsters in the back of the car.

The witness managed to stop the vehicle to get the children out.

But Whitehead carried on driving for a short while until police stopped him.

The father had 162 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres or breath – the limit is 35.

Whitehead, who admits the offence, was bailed to appear at Huddersfield Magistrates Court for sentencing on July 26.
