An eviction order is being sought at court today to remove travellers illegally staying on playing fields at Salendine Nook.

More than eight caravans pitched up a week ago on a playing field near a children’s play area off New Hey Road close to the Total garage.

The hearing will be held at Huddersfield County Court this morning.

Kirklees Council, which is responsible for maintaining the site, had installed barriers to stop search activity but it is alleged the travellers smashed the lock to allow access to the site.

The number of caravans on the site has dropped since the court order was applied for but due to the lengthy legal application and the Bank Holiday today’s hearing was the earliest it could be held.

This come just weeks after a court order to remove travellers illegally camped on nearby school fields.

And travellers have also pushed aside boulders to drive onto the open land just off Leeds Road, near Batley’s cash and carry.

This group, made up of around six families, arrived on Thursday night and plan to stay all week – unless they get evicted first.
