TRAVELLERS have been told to leave a car park by today.

They have been warned they run the risk of facing a county court judge if they refuse to leave the Brighouse site.

Calderdale Council issued the travellers with formal `quit' notices after they moved on to Bank Street car park two weeks ago.

In the past the devastation caused by travellers has left community grounds unusable.

The Examiner reported in September, 2005, that council tax payers in Kirklees have shelled out more than £75,000 in the last five years just to clean up after travellers.

A Calderdale spokesman said: "The land is being occupied without the council's consent and we are taking all the necessary steps to ensure the travellers leave as soon as possible.

"A summons, requesting the travellers to attend Halifax County Court today was served last Tuesday.

"A judge will then decide upon a course of action."

Local residents say the travellers' use of the site has caused disruption to motorists and workers and loss of earnings for the car park owner.
