A VAN driver had to be cut from his crushed van after a motorway pile-up.

A lorry and four other vehicles were involved in the shunt on the westbound carriageway of the M62 just before the Ainley Top turn-off at 8.45am today.

The van was shunted up a banking and the driver's door was caved in.

Leading Firefighter Ian Clough, of Brighouse fire station, said: "We had to pull the door off and then helped paramedics to get the man on a stretcher and into an ambulance."

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, but is not thought to be badly hurt.

The accident caused traffic hold-ups stretching back several miles.
