SNOW and ice sparked a spate of crashes on a moorland stretch of the M62.

Police were called to at least three accidents between Outlane and Windy Hill between midnight and 1am on Sunday.

In one, a car rolled over in mid-air on the westbound carriageway close to Scammonden Dam.

Amazingly the driver was unhurt.

Passing motorist John Breslin, of Wakefield, said: "I've never seen anything like it.

"It was just starting to snow and this car seemed to literally take off and fly through the air on the opposite carriageway.

"It all seemed to happen in slow motion as the car turned over and we called the police immediately fearing it was a very serious accident."

In separate incidents another car landed in the central reservation and a third careered down a banking close to Stott Hall Farm.
