FIRE crews spent four hours tackling a huge rubbish blaze in Huddersfield last night.

The fire started in stacks of garden waste, stored by Kirklees Council on land off Old Fieldhouse Lane.

Thick palls of smoke drifted over Hillhouse as fire crews from Huddersfield and Mirfield arrived to fight the fire.

Crew Manager Dave Chadwick said: “It was a huge pile of material from local parks and gardens, spread over 30 metres of land.

“It was a very difficult job and we had crews using four jets and water from the nearby canal to put out the fire.

“Kirklees Council came down with an excavator to move the material so that we could get at the deep-seated fire”.

The alarm was raised just after 8pm and crews were at the scene until well after midnight.

The cause is under investigation.
