VANDALS have hit a cricket club.
They badly damaged the pitch at the Denby Dale club, forcing it to call off Saturday’s game against Almondbury Wesleyans in the Arrow Huddersfield Central League.
The vandalism at the Wakefield Road ground happened overnight between Friday and Saturday.
The lid from a grit bin is believed to have been broken off and used to spread grit around the wicket.
A stone was removed from the surrounding dry stone wall.
Also, a prepared wicket was vandalised with graffiti.
Police Community Support Officer Richard Hobson, of the Kirkburton Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This mindless vandalism resulted in Saturday’s game being cancelled.
“It will take a lot of time and effort for volunteers to rectify the surface.
“A similar incident occurred last September.
“This will not be tolerated.
“I would appeal for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Kirkburton NPT on 01484 436898."
