CRIME in Deighton tops the league tables for Kirklees, it has been revealed.

But the figures produced at a council meeting were branded unreliable by councillors because of the way they were compiled.

A chart listing total crimes per 1,000 head of population for April to September this year, revealed the average rate to be 70.9.

But in Deighton the figure was 199.1.

Mr Chris Walsh, of the Kirklees Community Safety Partnership, said: "Certain crimes are influenced by the make-up of the area.

"For example, Deighton always comes out at the top because it includes the town centre."

Clr Susan May said: "It's a waste of time for the committee."

Clr Ken Smith, chairman of the Huddersfield Committee- Community Safety Sub-Group, said: "A large part of Deighton is in the commercial part of the town centre. All the commercial activity on Leeds Road and the stadium are also included.

"Newsome and Paddock also include parts of the town centre."

Clr Annie Smith said: "It is really important for us to be able to sort out what is the town centre and what is not."

Other figures showed the number of house burglaries.

The rate for all Kirklees was 14.6 per 1,000 households.

Crosland Moor was the highest rate in Huddersfield, at 23.9.

It was followed by Newsome at 23.3 and Birkby at 21.3.

For vehicle crime, Deighton had the highest level in Huddersfield at 19.4 incidents per 1,000 people. Yet it had the lowest level of car ownership.

Clr Smith asked how the police could achieve intelligence-led policing without more detailed data.

Mr Simon Massey, of the Community Safety Partnership, said the police used another formula which was not open to public disclosure.

Clr Annie Smith said the figures showed that crime in Birkby had gone down, but in Lindley it appeared to have gone up by as much as it had dropped in Birkby.

Mr Massey said this may have been to do with attempts to make properties more secure following a burglary.
