School’s out – forever – for youngsters at Crosland Moor Junior School.

The school closed its doors on Friday (April 29) after 60 years – and is due to re-open on Tuesday as newly-merged Oak C of E Primary School.

It was the end of an era for the junior school, Dryclough infants and Thornton Lodge nursery schools which have become one under new head David Bendall.

Youngsters at the junior school went out with a bang-hra, performing a flash mob banghra dance in the playground.

There was also a special assembly where children sang So Long, Farewell, the song from The Sound of Music, which brought a tear to many eyes, and a special version of Never Forget by Take That.

After school there was a celebration and reunion for staff and former staff.

The school was built in 1956 at a cost of £76,000 and Mr Bendall said: “It is with great sadness and with many fond memories that we say goodbye to Crosland Moor Junior School.

“I have had the pleasure of working here for six years as deputy headteacher and acting headteacher and I can honestly say it is a truly special and unique place to work.

“The children, staff, parents, governors and community all help to create this wonderful sense of family and I would like them to thank them one and all for all their hard work and support. Without this the school would not be able to move forward in the strong position it is in now.”

The children all finished the day with a Dixon’s ice cream.
