A MAN has appeared in court accused of burgling an unoccupied town centre building.

Robert Sykes, of College Street in Crosland Moor, was before Kirklees magistrates in Huddersfield yesterday

He is alleged to have targeted the former Co-op on New Street, Huddersfield.

The alleged offence took place just after 10pm on November 7.

Bill Astin, prosecuting, said that police went to the building after its alarm was activated.

Officers found that the fire escape door had been opened and conducted a search.

They discovered that some cable had been cut on the lower floor.

Mr Astin said that police threw CS gas into the room and Sykes appeared.

Sykes, 26, denies the charge.

Magistrates were asked to adjourn his case until February 7.

Sykes’ co-accused Sheena Muffitt, also of College Street, is due in court then so the cases can be tied.

He was granted unconditional bail.
