A MAN has been jailed after refusing to comply with his court order.

Robert Sykes, of College Street in Crosland Moor, told Kirklees magistrates that he would not stick to the terms of his community order.

The order, made for a string of offences, was made as a direct alternative to prison.

But Sykes failed to attend his unpaid work appointments twice.

He was then ordered to attend court for the breach, but was then arrested after not showing up.

Sykes, 26, was told to complete unpaid work as part of the community order in October.

He was sentenced after admitting two charges of being found in an enclosed premises for the purpose of theft.

Sykes also pleaded guilty to possession of a Class B drug.

Magistrates were told that on August 15 police received a call about a torch light being shone in a scrapyard in George Street in Huddersfield.

Officers found Sykes there. He was later charged with possession of amphetamine following a search in Swan Lane at Lockwood.

On May 13 he was found acting suspiciously in the grounds of the former St Luke’s hospital in Crosland Moor.

But the court heard that Sykes failed to attend for unpaid work on November 13 and 14.

Of the 250 hours he was ordered to complete, he attended only his one-hour induction.

Rachel Smith, for Sykes, said that her client admitted breaching the order.

She said: “He feels he is unable to comply and invited you to send him to prison.”

Jailing him for 12 weeks, magistrates slammed Sykes for his “persistent failure” to comply.
