A NEW supported living scheme for Huddersfield adults with learning disabilities is being officially opened on Friday.

And the development of Cartwright Gardens in Crosland Moor is hailed as a major step forward to achieving Kirklees Council’s ambition to help adults with learning disabilities live independently in the community.

It will be officially opened by Clr Molly Walton, Kirklees Council Cabinet member for adult services.

She said: “Cartwright Gardens is an excellent example of a partnership between the council, Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing and Mencap.

“It gives people with learning disabilities the opportunity to have independence in their own home and a greater choice and control over their lives and in how they live.

“There will also be 24-hour support should they need it.”

Jill Robson, from Mencap, said: “We were delighted to work with Kirklees Adult Services and Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing on this development.

“The people who have moved into Cartwright Gardens previously lived in one of our residential care homes, so supported living will be quite a change for them.”
