A DOG drowned after it was thrown into a reservoir by its cruel owner.

Firefighters believe the unwanted pet was weighted down before it was chucked into the water.

People out walking saw a car pull up to the reservoir near the Great Western pub off Manchester Road above Marsden at 6.45 last night.

Someone got out of the car and threw the dog into the water. The car then drove off.

The onlookers called firefighters from Marsden and a specialist water rescue tender also went to the scene from Brighouse, but firefighter Graham Laycock from Brighouse fire station, said: "Sadly we could find no trace of the dog even though we searched for quite a while.

"People pointed out where they thought the dog had been thrown in, but it had disappeared without trace."

The water was about 10ft deep at that point and firefighters donned specialist waterproof drysuits to search the reservoir.

Firefighter Laycock added: "From the description we were given it was a Yorkshire Terrier and must have been weighted down.

"What happened to it was very cruel."
