A MAN jailed for a savage attack with a pool cue failed in a bid to cut his 15-month jail term.

Wayne Hartshorne, 41, of Hill Crest Flats, Rashcliffe, Lockwood, was jailed at Bradford Crown Court last October after pleading guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and possessing cannabis.

But Mr Justice Bodey, sitting at the Appeal Court in London yesterday, refused to cut Hartshorne's jail term, dismissing arguments that it was "manifestly excessive".

The judge said the attack took place in Hartshorne's home in December, 2003, after he and the victim had smoked cannabis together.

They fell asleep in the front room, only for Hartshorne to wake his guest up by tapping him on the head with a pool cue while brandishing a "large" knife.

When the man tried to get up off the chair, Hartshorne struck him with the cue several times.

The victim suffered a broken elbow, bruising to his back and swollen hands.

The terrified man ran on to a balcony, where he held the door shut. He then fled past Hartshorne, who swung the knife at him, but missed.

Hartshorne's lawyers said the sentence was too long. They said he suffered brain damage in an axe attack in the early 1990s and had trouble restraining impulsive behaviour.

They said he only pleaded guilty on the basis that the man was an unwelcome guest in his house and he was afraid of him.
