A SERIES of multicultural events is taking place in north Kirklees.

The Dewsbury, Batley and Cleckheaton Multicultural Arts Festival includes music, dance and arts and crafts.

It takes place at the three town halls on the first three Saturdays in February – February 2 at Dewsbury Town Hall, February 9 at Batley and February 16 at Cleckheaton.

There will be workshops at all three events to learn about henna painting, jewellery making, lantern making, silk painting and family history.

At the Dewsbury event there will be the Dewsbury Factor – a talent show based on TV’s X Factor. Auditions are from 11am to 1.30pm, with the final at 2pm. Prizes include a day recording at Beaumont Street Studios in Huddersfield.

There will also be Asian music and a performance by Kirklees Voices young people’s group.

The Batley event includes music from Brazil, Polish dance and Asian music and poetry.

The Cleckheaton day includes a ceilidh, Chinese performers and African and Asian music and dance.

Clr Liz Smaje, Kirklees Council’s cabinet member for leisure and neighbourhood services, said: “This is a remarkable line-up.”
