AN MP is saying `no' to longer Sunday shopping.

Shahid Malik, Labour MP for Dewsbury, spoke against a bid by large retail companies and out-of-town shopping centres to press to open for more than the six hours permitted now.

He said: "Family time is precious. All the staff who work to keep large shops open deserve at least some time at weekends to spend with their children, family or friends."

Mr Malik is one of 152 MPs who have signed a motion opposing the move.

He added: "Shops can open for 150 hours a week should they choose. That is enough for anyone to do their shopping.

"Sundays are special and the vast majority of people want them to stay special."
