CHARITIES are to benefit from Huddersfield's recycling public.

Councillors at a Kirklees Regeneration Committee meeting agreed that money saved through greater public recycling efforts will go to the mayor's charity appeal.

This means that the council will share any savings it makes in landfill tax between the two charities, Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton and the Laura Crane Trust, which helps young cancer sufferers.

It is hoped this will encourage Kirklees people to increase their recycling performance.

A report to the committee said: "For every tonne of relevant waste which is recycled above the estimated baseline, the council will share equally between the charities any savings it makes, including the landfill tax which would otherwise have been paid to Customs and Excise."

Clr Ann Denham, Kirklees Cabinet member responsible for the environment and transport, said: "This is a creative scheme which I hope we can all support.

"The more we recycle in Kirklees - and we do need to recycle more - the more money will go two local charities.

"The hospice and the trust are keen to support this and with your help will receive this money."
