FASHION students are being asked if they can "cut it" in the high-profile industry.

Budding designers from Huddersfield are being asked to enter the Clotheshow Live Can U Cut It? contest.

The UK-wide competition aims to promote creative and technical skills.

Last year, Huddersfield Technical College student Maria Grzywacz, of Linthwaite, made it through to the last 49 students out of 137 in the final at the London College of Fashion.

Five regional finals will take place in June. One will be at the Huddersfield Textile Centre of Excellence at Red Doles Lane.

Regional winners will go on a VIP trip to the Clotheshow Live event in December.

The overall winner will be awarded a £9,000 educational bursary.

Tom Edge, chairman of the CAPITB Trust, the industry group that has sponsored the competition, said: "A designer's technical knowledge is as important as their design skills.

"That is why I am proud to be associated with a competition that highlights the importance of the right technical skills for students."
