THE route of a new cycleway running through the heart of Kirklees has been chosen.

Kirklees Council Cabinet members picked a course for the Calder Valley route.

It follows an old railway line running between Dewsbury and Huddersfield, parallel to the A644 and A62 roads.

Kirklees councillor and keen cyclist Martyn Bolt congratulated Cabinet members on their decision.

"Credit where it's due. They took a brave decision to go against their officers," he said.

Sustrans, the body which helps pay for cycleways around the country, supported a route along the old railway line.

Council officers wanted a path alongside a waterway.

The cycleway will link up with the Spen Valley Greenway to provide a safe, quiet and attractive route for cyclists, horse riders and walkers.

It will cost between £600,000 and £700,000 over five years.
