An elderly cyclist was flung 30ft down the road and knocked unconscious after he was clipped by a 4x4 in Huddersfield, witnesses said.

The man, thought to be in his 60s or 70s, was taken to hospital after a collision with a Range Rover Evoque on the south-bound Bradford Road, just after the junction with Ashbrow Road in Fartown.

Workers from nearby Wilco Motosave car parts shop witnessed the incident and ran to help the victim as he lay in the busy two lane road.

It is thought the victim was not wearing a helmet and has received an injury to his head, following the crash just after 12.30pm today.

He was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the man had a “serious injury but his condition was not thought to be life threatening”.

Employees from the car parts firm said the man had been travelling down-hill away from Asda at Brackenhall and was manoeuvring to turn right with his arm out when he was struck by the vehicle, which was turning from a side road.

The woman driving the luxury vehicle was uninjured but described as “really shaken up”.

One of the men from the shop said they had directed traffic and untangled the man from his bicycle.

He said: “He was completely still at first as he was unconscious and then after five minutes he started shaking.

“When he came round we thought he was alright and we moved him onto the grass, but he was slurring his words.

“He took a big hit to the head and he had no helmet on.”

Ambulance service rapid response vehicles arrived at the scene quickly to tend to the man and an ambulance arrived shortly after.

A passer-by used a car to block the outside lane of the two lane road.

Police arrived later and sealed off the lane while they investigated the incident.
