HE started out as a bedtime story made up by a Huddersfield dad.

Now he’s a genuine comic-book hero!

So say hello to Baked Bean Boy.

Huddersfield dad Steven Harrison has turned a bedtime story for his children into a published book.

Steven Harrison, 38, of Taylor Hill, launched his book, The Adventures Of Baked Bean Boy, at Holmfirth Library this week.

It tells of the adventures of a schoolboy who harnesses ‘protein power’ from baked beans to give him super strength to defeat school bullies and help his friends.

The character is based on Mr Harrison’s own son, James, 12, and his sidekick is based on daughter Olivia, 10.

Mr Harrison said: “I wrote the story about three or four years ago for my own kids. It stemmed from a day when we had been for lunch and James was covered in beans and I called him ‘baked bean boy’.

“Basically, the character eats lots of baked beans and it affects him like it does most people.

“But he uses this to see off enemies and help people out.”

Mr Harrison decided to publish the story after getting to know Holmfirth artist Ben Simpson, who offered to create artwork for the book.

Ben, who now lives in Bradford and goes by the professional name Dr Simpo, gave the story comic-style graphics. Printers have produced 1,000 copies of the book.

Mr Harrison has no plans to become a full-time author; he works as a kitchen designer at B&Q, runs Holmfirth restaurant Number 11 with wife Onita and even finds time to be in a rock covers band called Wyld Stallyns.

“We are trying to get a publisher interested, but I’m a busy man, writing’s not a career.

“It was just something I did for my own kids.”

The £3.50 book is on sale at Number 11.
