The father of Huw Thatcher spoke of a ‘fantastic feeling’ as he reached the halfway stage of a cycle tour of football grounds in his son’s memory.

Nick Thatcher is touring the 19 football grounds, where he and his late son watched their beloved Cardiff City, by bicycle.

He’s raising cash for the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust.

Huw, 15, from Holmfirth, died from an diagnosed brain aneurysm while playing football for Hepworth United, in March 2011.

Huw’s uncle Robert Thatcher and cousin Michael Thatcher – also Cardiff City fans – have too been riding since Saturday from Cardiff City to clubs across the length and breadth of England.

Joined for sections of the route by friends and family, the trio reached Holmfirth on Monday for a brief rest.

They’re now off to Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Newcastle United before they tour grounds of Lancashire clubs.

Their journey finishes at Upperthong Cricket Club on Sunday.

The Huw Thatcher Trust, set up by Nick, has so far raised £96,000 for the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust.

Despite a wobbly start leaving Cardiff – a three-hour thunderstorm and nine punctures – the riders are now enjoying the challenge.

Nick said yesterday: “We’re about halfway through and we’re feeling really good. We’ve had a fantastic reception from people.

“For me, it feels like a really great way of remembering Huw.

“Physically and emotionally it’s been going fantastically.”
