COUNCILLORS have given a taxi office plan the red light.

Planners knocked back the proposal to set up a cab booking office on Wakefield Road in Dalton.

Tariq Saleem had asked Kirklees Council for permission to establish the office at the junction of Dalton Green Lane.

Resident Jacqueline Myers spoke against the proposal at the council’s Huddersfield Planning Sub-committee yesterday afternoon.

She said: “How many taxi firms does one area need? There are two to your left and two to your right within a 10-minute walk either way.”

Dalton Labour man Clr Cliff Preest also called for the plan to be turned down.

He told councillors at Huddersfield Town Hall: “Wakefield Road is the busiest arterial road in Huddersfield.”

Almondbury Lib Dem Clr Ann Denham suggested that the sub-committee should give Mr Saleem permission to open the office for a six-month trial period.

But the sub-committee voted nine to four to throw to refuse permission for the taxi office on the grounds of road safety.
