A "DEVIANT" fantasist who imprisoned and raped a vulnerable woman was branded "a danger to the community" as he was caged.

John Hanrahan, 21, was sentenced to serve at least four-and-a-half-years for the rape and false imprisonment of a 21-year-old woman with learning difficulties.

But the judge admitted it could be "many years" before Hanrahan was fit to be released.

Hanrahan, of Holme Park Court, Berry Brow, was found guilty of the offences following a five-day trial at Bradford Crown Court last month.

The 21-year-old victim was in Huddersfield bus station intending to travel back to her Bradford home on May 23 this year, but she ended up on a bus which went near Hanrahan's home.

A suspicious security guard alerted police after he saw Hanrahan and the victim entering his flat.

Mitigating for her client, Sarah Drake said he had been taken into care aged two.

She said: "From an early age he has had no guidance in his life and no secure relationships."

She added: "He is an extremely isolated young man who himself is vulnerable."

Sentencing Hanrahan at Leeds Crown Court yesterday, Judge Jonathan Durham-Hall QC said: "From the word go you proceeded to abuse her. You undressed her. You subjected her to a prolonged sexual ordeal."

He added: "You ignored her repeated and persistent requests for you to stop, her pleas, her begging and her tears."

The judge said Hanrahan had taken the girl's mobile phone from her and kept her prisoner until the police arrived.

He added: "What would have happened if the police had not arrived is a matter of the gravest concern in my judgement."

Police discovered sketches by Hanrahan of naked young girls around his flat.

The judge said he was "living out a fantasy".

He added: "You display distorted and deviant sexual attitudes."

The judge sentenced Hanrahan to serve at least four-and-a-half years in jail, minus time served on remand, before being eligible to even be considered for parole.

He said the rape was particularly unpleasant and Hanrahan's risk of re-offending was "extremely grave".
