NEWSOME youths have been risking serious injury by playing dangerous games with hay bales.

Youngsters have been spotted rolling the huge bales down a slope in a field off Newsome Road South.

The bales have been rolled to block a public footpath which runs through the field, linking Newsome Road South to Hall Bower.

The path is regularly used as a short cut by local residents.

But since last week it has been completely impassable because of the bales.

Newsome resident Gary Moss reported the problem to Kirklees Council and said he feared that someone could be badly hurt if they were hit by one of the large moving bales.

Mr Moss also took his concerns to Newsome councillor Julie Stewart-Turner.

She said: "The problem started in July but people could still use the path.

"Now it is impassable. Rolling the bales could be dangerous if someone was walking in the field at the time.

"But I don't think the children would be doing it if there was anybody in the vicinity. They'd be hiding.

"It is more of an inconvenience really. It's quite frustrating."

Mrs Stewart-Turner said a Kirklees Council public rights of way officer is liaising with the farmer who owns the field about removing the bales.

The path is expected to be clear by the end of this week.
