A Marsh man who punched a police officer while resisting arrest for breaching a restraining order has been jailed for 16 weeks.

Darren Mooney, of Brooks Buildings in Marsh, was arrested on April 16 for contacting his ex-partner Lisa Iredale despite a restraining order imposed last year.

The court heard he was found at Miss Iredale’s Slaithwaite home shortly before midnight and had been throwing stones at the windows.

Police attended and Mooney resisted arrest.

Alex Bozman, prosecuting told Kirklees Magistrates today that the couple had been in a ‘volatile’ relationship with a history of domestic abuse for 18 months. When it ended Miss Iredale had sought a restraining order against Mooney.

The court heard Mooney had been struggling with his home life and in particular had been caring for his terminally-ill mother.

Mooney had sent a number of text messages expressing his concern to Miss Iredale on April 16.

But Mr Bozman said the messages turned ‘threatening’ and culminated in him turning up at her home address.

Miss Iredale contacted police and they turned up to arrest Mooney but during the incident he punched a police officer.

He was restrained with CS spray and taken to the police station into custody.

Magistrates said they considered the offence was only suitable to be dealt with by custody due to the breach of the restraining order and failure to comply with the community order imposed.

Mooney was jailed for 16 weeks.
