Darts world No1 Michael van Gerwen is coming back to Huddersfield next year.

Dutch sensation van Gerwen came to Huddersfield Town’s Canalside complex in September last year as part of a sponsorship event.

Now he is heading for the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre for a top class exhibition match.

Van Gerwen, who won every Professional Darts Corporation major title by the age of 26, will be joined on stage by World Grand Prix champion Robert Thornton, Australian icon Simon Whitlock and fast-throwing Vincent van der Voort.

The inaugural Rhubarb Huddersfield Darts Masters will take place on Friday March 18.

The event is the first of its kind at the new leisure centre at Springwood.

As well as top quality arrows, darts fans will enjoy the full experience as seen on TV with big screens, walk-ons, music and a professional stage set-up.

Van Gerwen, who last came to Huddersfield to take on competition winners in a promotion organised by his sponsors Leyland Paints, said he was looking forward to coming back.

“It is a really strong line-up so fans will be treated to an excellent night of darts,” he said. “It should be a lot of fun but we are also all there to win.

“I heard that there are a lot of darts fans in the area so I’m sure they will create a great atmosphere and have a really good night.”
