DRIVERS are being warned of possible delays when a gas main is replaced in Honley.

Work will start on Saturday in the village.

An old metal main crossing New Mill Road and Woodhead Road will be replaced with more durable plastic pipe.

The operation has been timed for the summer so as to minimise disruption.

Dean Shepherdson, network operations manager for United Utilities, said it was hoped to finish the work before the end of the school holidays.

"This is essential work, but we appreciate that it can be inconvenient for local people and we're sorry about that," he said. "Our contractors will be working through weekends and bringing in extra engineering teams whenever they can."

The work will start in New Mill Road and involve narrowing both lanes. Short diversions will be signed to keep the traffic flowing as quickly as possible.

The company says part of Northgate will become temporarily one-way.

Work on Northgate and Woodhead Road will not begin until traffic on New Mill Road has returned to normal.
