A man has been fined after stealing a cement mixer from a building site.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that the incident happened on April 18 near to Huddersfield town centre

David Elliott pulled up outside a property under renovation on Firth Street site in his white Transit van.

The 35-year-old then entered the site with a second man, who has not been identified.

A short time later they went back to the van with the cement mixer, valued at £250, and drove off with it.

Their vehicle was then stopped on Chapel Hill in the town.

Elliott said he believed that the equipment was broken and he was going to scrap it.

He told the court: “It was a one-off - I was helping a friend out.”

District Judge Michael Fanning ordered Elliott, of Vickers Road in Sheffield, to pay £150.

He also has to pay £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge,
