A courier has appeared in court accused of stealing £30,000 worth of equipment from firefighters.

David Maddra, 40, was before Kirklees magistrates yesterday facing six charges of theft by employee between January and July last year.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said during that time Maddra was employed by West Yorkshire Fire Service and his role was to transport items from the service’s headquarters in Birkenshaw.

Mr Bozman said that six thermal imaging cameras, each worth £5,000, went missing.

He told magistrates that subsequent enquiries suggested that Maddra, of Marshall Court in Leeds, was responsible.

Maddra gave no indication as to what his plea to the charges will be at the Huddersfield hearing.

Magistrates committed his case to Leeds Crown Court, where he will first appear on October 7. Unconditional bail was granted.
