MEMBERS at a Slaithwaite day centre for people with disabilities could soon be growing their own fruit and veg.

People who use the Waves day centre at Upper Mills in Canal Side received a £2,500 donation.

The money was handed over by the Huddersfield Greenhead Masonic Lodge. It will be split between the centre’s garden project and its token fund.

The centre plans to grow its own produce and sell it at the Green Valley grocers in Slaithwaite.

The Token Fund links the centre with local businesses and exchanges the labour of members for tokens for goods and services.

The donation came about at the request of freemason Ivan Johnson, whose wife Carol is team leader at the centre. One of the couple’s children, Chloe, 28, attends the centre, which has 45 members, mainly people in their 20s and 30s.
