A FUN day in Meltham this weekend aims to get villagers fit and promote community spirit.
The event, organised by Kirklees Council's area committee for Holme Valley North, will include fun runs for all ages.
There will also be entertainment with the Meltham and Meltham Mills Band, a bouncy castle, a Punch and Judy show and exhibitions of karate and aerobics. The fun starts at Meltham Sports and Community Centre on Mean Lane at 11am on Sunday.
The idea came from Clr Terry Lyons who is a keen runner and promoter of active lifestyles. He said he wanted to organise something partly to raise awareness of the area committee, but mostly to bring together young and old, families and individuals.
The Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Mary Harkin, will start the first junior race at 11am and there will be races for the under 8s, under 11s, under 15s and a family run – with special prizes for the first grandma and grandad.
There will also be information about allotments plus a visit from the Thurlstone Owl Sanctuary.
Clr Lyons has visited schools in and around the Meltham area to drum up support and give everyone a chance to take part.
He said: "We're hoping this will become an annual event and move to other villages across the ward."
Clr Lyons has promised that any profit from the event will go to the Mayor's charity, Homestart Kirklees, which supports families in need with children aged under five.
