HUNDREDS of dead fish have been found in Huddersfield.
The Environment Agency received reports of distressed and dying fish on a stretch of the River Colne between Milnsbridge and Huddersfield town centre.
There were also reports of dead fish in the Aspley Basin of Huddersfield Broad Canal.
Around 400 fish, most of them roach, are believed to have died since March 20.
Environment Agency officers have taken water samples from the river and canal and are conducting an ecological survey to assess the impact on other river life.
Spokesman Mark West said the agency was trying to discover why the fish had died.
He said: “There is no obvious evidence of pollution but we are trying to trace the source. It’s very unlikely the fish died because of natural causes, such as a lack of oxygen in the water.”
Local angling groups have been informed of the problem and have responded with reports of distressed and dying fish.
The Environment Agency would like to hear from anyone who knows about possible pollution of either the river or the canal before March 20.
