TWO men killed in a motorbike tragedy have been named.

Builder and roofer Michael Smith, 51, and 24-year-old Darren Richard Marney both died in the accident on Manchester Road, Marsden, on Monday afternoon.

Mr Smith lived at Walpole Road in Crosland Moor.

Mr Marney, a warehouse supervisor, lived on nearby Sullivan Close.

They died almost instantly as their bikes hit the side of a lorry on Manchester Road above Marsden at 3.35pm on Monday.

Both were declared dead at the scene by a doctor.

The tragedy is thought to have happened when the lorry loaded with crushed limestone had pulled into the lower entrance of the roadside Motorman's Cafe and then came back out of the top entrance to turn right and go back into Marsden.

The bikes came around the sweeping left-hand bend and into the side of the lorry.

Both bikes are blue, and the men are thought to have travelled out of Huddersfield town centre right up Manchester Road.
