A 37-YEAR-old Meltham man facing charges of drink-driving and careless driving following a fatal collision has made his first appearance before a crown court judge.

Richard Mail, of Copley Avenue, was charged with driving while over the alcohol limit and driving without due care and attention after Gary Pedelty was killed in a collision on Huddersfield Road last November.

The 24-year-old victim, who did a tour of Iraq with the 3rd Yorkshire Regiment and played amateur rugby league for Meltham All Blacks, died following a collision involving his Mazda 323 and a Peugeot 206.

The former Honley High School pupil, who was six feet eight inches tall, had worked with his father Kevin as a plasterer.

Mail appeared at Bradford Crown Court yesterday for a brief preliminary hearing and a further plea and case management hearing was fixed for August 15.

It is expected that Mail will formally enter his pleas to the charges at the next hearing and a trial date has been fixed for December 12.

Judge Robert Bartfield extended Mail’s conditional bail until the hearing in August.
