A VALENTINE'S night out ended in tragedy for a Huddersfield man.
He died after falling downstairs at his home, an inquest heard yesterday.
Brian Leslie McKee- ver had been drinking at Golcar British Legion Club with his wife Mary Ann and friends just hours before he died.
But on returning to his home in Sunnybank View, Longwood, shortly before midnight he fell backwards down the stairs and suffered a fractured skull and severe bleeding.
In a statement to the inquest, Mrs McKeever said her husband had gone up to the bathroom while she was preparing some hot milk.
She suddenly heard a series of thuds and ran into the hallway and found him lying there.
Mr McKeever, 67, who worked as a cleaner, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he died in the early hours of February 15.
A post-mortem revealed he had suffered severe head injuries and had drunk about eight pints of beer.
Recording a verdict of accidental death, Kirklees coroner Roger Whittaker said: "With that level of alcohol on board he would have been unsteady on his feet."
