A MAN who helped improve public transport in Brighouse has died.

Clr Geoffrey Wainwright, a member of Calderdale Council for 19 years, was a forthright campaigner for better bus services.

He was also instrumental in steering through plans for a new bus station in Brighouse, which is currently under construction.

Clr Wainwright, 74, had been a Conservative member of Calderdale Council since 1990, representing the Skircoat ward.

He also served on the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Authority.

He devoted much of his time to local issues and had been a key member of protest groups backing Rastrick residents fighting for better bus services.

A colleague paid tribute to him.

Clr Joyce Cawthra said he was a friend and a colleague who was always there to help others.

She said: “Geoff worked hard for the whole of Calderdale and had been involved with many issues in the Brighouse area. People had only to ask and he was there to help. He was a bit like a father confessor for the council.”

Clr Wainwright was born and brought up in Halifax. A funeral was taking place today at Halifax Parish Church at 11am followed by cremation at Park Wood, Elland.
