IT may be third time lucky for Rastrick Fire Station after councillors deferred a decision on the plans for a second time.

It’s because a council officer updated councillors just minutes before they were due to begin hearing the case for a new fire station in Rastrick.

A council planning officer told the hearing at Calderdale Council that while noise surveys had been conducted, it didn’t include details of noise on summer evenings when fire drills could take place.

Councillors were told they could either hear the application and make a decision knowing the survey was incomplete, or defer making a decision, something they were advised to do by a legal officer.

It means a test drill and further investigation will have to be carried out before the final details can be considered by councillors on the planning committee.

Clr Steve Sweeney, chair of the planning committee, took a vote of members who all agreed to defer making a decision until all information could be presented to them.

Members of the public and fellow Calderdale councillors had attended the meeting for the second time, and asked for details of the report to be published.

Councillors on the planning committee had been due to make a decision on the fire station planning application in December but that was also deferred to publicise that an affecting public right of way runs through the proposed fire station site at Clough Lane, Rastrick.

The council had a duty to highlight the issue and allow members of the public to comment on the issue.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service wants permission for a fire station in Rastrick to replace the current Brighouse and Elland stations, which are being closed as part of wider cost-cutting.

Thirty-four people opposed the application, with concerns ranging from traffic worries to fears of a new motorway junction at Rastrick.
