A DEER had to be destroyed after getting trapped in mud.

It is believed the one-year-old deer was chased into mud early yesterday in Barkisland.

But despite a rescue effort from Elland and Brighouse firefighters, a vet said it would be kinder to put the animal down.

Elland watch manager Rick Painter said: “It was quite a big deer and it was stuck.

“We did all we could to rescue it but the vet said it would be best to put it to sleep. It was quite an unusual job for us to be called to.”

The incident happened behind Barkisland Mill at midday yesterday.
