MOTHER and daughter Jacqueline and Janine Ellam have a double cause for celebration this week.

Both have graduated from university with the same degree in nursing.

Yesterday Jacqueline, 51, received a Diploma in Higher Education for adult nursing after three years' study at Huddersfield University.

She was on stage in Huddersfield Town Hall to receive her award.

Daughter Janine, 27, a former King James's School pupil, received the same degree from De Montfort University, Leicester, last week.

"I left school at 15 with no qualifications and started caring a year later," said mum Jacqueline, of Coniston Avenue, Dalton.

"I've worked in nursing homes and as a bank nurse for most of my working life and after studying for GCSE English and an NVQ, I thought I was on a roll and three years ago I decided to study for a degree.

"The ear, nose and throat ward where I worked at the infirmary was moving to Calderdale and I didn't fancy travelling there, so I decided to study, but amazingly I have ended up at Calderdale on the same ward and I love the atmosphere here."

Janine worked and travelled in Greece after she left school and then worked as a carer and bank nurse like her mum.

She now works at the Leicester Royal Hospital.

Proud husband John and son Jason attended the graduation ceremony with Jacqueline and Janine to share the big day.
