A workman has died in hospital seven days after he was crushed during demolition works in Deighton.

Police were informed yesterday that the 35-year-old man had died at Leeds General Infirmary on Tuesday.

An investigation is underway for the coroner and on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive - standard practice in commercial accidents.

It is thought the workman, who has not been named, was partially buried when a wall collapsed at the former Deighton Centre.

The man was one of a number of contractors who have been carrying out demolition work on the site.

Other workers rushed to help him and two ambulances were called to the scene at 2.15pm on April 28.

The site is the former home of the Deighton High School, which closed down years ago to become The Deighton Centre, a training base for Kirklees Council.

It has been plagued by a series of arson attacks in the past couple of weeks.
