A COUPLE who lost their first baby are vowing to help other parents-to-be.

Deighton couple Richard Dawson and girlfriend Lucy Williams were devastated when Lucy had a miscarriage last May – 11 weeks into the pregnancy.

The couple found that close friends had also lost babies during pregnancy so a group of their friends are now climbing Yorkshire’s Three Peaks to support other expectant parents.

They are raising money for Tommy’s – a charity that funds medical research into pregnancy problems.

Lucy, 27, is a nurse at a Barnsley hospital.

Her partner of seven years Richard, 26, is an admin officer for a Leeds security company.

Richard said: “Lucy was 11 or 12 weeks when we lost the baby, but we didn’t realise until our first scan on the 14th week.

“It was an awful time for us both – it was our first child.

“She had to stay in hospital and go through the process which was just awful.

“I think then we knew we wanted to do something to stop anyone else going through it.

“We chose Tommy’s because it’s a baby charity trying to stop this.”

Richard will climb the three peaks this weekend with friends Stuart Whitten, Greg Kirk, Peter Dawson, Chris Adkin, Jason Tweedy, Rob Varley, Oli Wood, Johnny Kermode, Lee Rushforth, Chris Morton, John Atkin and Kevin Tweedy.

Richard added: “I’ve never done anything like climbing a mountain before, but when something like this happens you want to help however you can.

“I’ve been training and have done 16 miles out of the 26 so hopefully the camaraderie between us all will help.

“We’re not the only ones to experience a miscarriage, another couple expecting twins lost one of them so it’s happening to many people.

“We’d love to raise £4,000 for Tommy’s and hope that we can really help make a difference.”
